Some places stay with us forever, and Kavac is one of them. This excursion takes you to the very heart of Canaima National Park, where time seems to pause and the soul expands. Surrounded by sacred canyons, hidden caves, and crystal-clear waters, this is an experience that many travelers find as powerful —or even more so— than visiting Angel Falls itself.
A journey to the center of the Earth
• The adventure begins with a short scenic flight from Canaima Airport (the same one you arrived at) to Kavac. The flight is aboard a small aircraft like a five-seat Cessna 206, offering 30 minutes of spectacular views! Rivers, jungle, and the watchful tepuis —it’s a treat for all the senses, not just the eyes!
• Upon landing, the silence wraps around you —the energy shifts. You are entering sacred territory for the Pemón people, a land full of myths and memory. This is the Kamarata Valley, located on the southeastern side of the Auyantepui, home to the tiny indigenous village of Kavac, whose warm-hearted residents welcome visitors with the kindness that defines these communities.
• Local guides will lead you on a gentle yet awe-inspiring hike. You'll leave the open savannah behind, following the riverbank into the jungle to discover natural pools and small waterfalls embraced by lush vegetation. (The scenery varies beautifully depending on the time of year!)
• Eventually, you’ll reach Kavac Canyon, where water and stone have carved a surreal landscape. You’ll enter a small pool and swim through it (with the help of guides and ropes for support) to reach what lies beyond.
• At the end of the trail awaits a hidden waterfall inside a cave —accessible only by swimming. Here you are, in the heart of the grotto, where a dazzling waterfall cascades from above, surrounded by towering ancient rock walls more than 150 meters high. Reaching this point is a rite of passage. A baptism. A deeply personal encounter with nature’s raw power.
• Along the way, it feels like the colors themselves are celebrating! The reddish, amber, turquoise, and terracotta hues of the rocks, water, and vegetation —with their rich textures— seem like something out of a sci-fi movie. As if you were walking through the veins of a Tepui. It’s truly unforgettable —a burst of ancestral energy that will leave you breathless.
• Back in the village of Kavac, you’ll enjoy a delicious grilled chicken lunch, and have time to rest, wander, shop for local crafts, or simply relax and take in the vibe of this peaceful little place.
• Then it's time to fly back to Canaima —but wait! The return flight includes a surprise: a flyover of the Auyantepui plateau for a bird’s-eye view of the majestic Angel Falls! It’s absolutely priceless and truly beyond words!
