Come and get to know one of the most impressive and energetic natural wonders that our beautiful Venezuela has to offer! Discover the beauty of the waterfalls and tepuis that the Canaima Lagoon shelters in its enigmatic waters and then head out to see with your own eyes the highest waterfall in the world that descends from the top of Auyantepuy... Angel Falls! in the heart of the Venezuelan jungle.

For many years, the most requested package to get to know Angel Falls was the 3 days and 2 nights package. Currently, the itineraries available are 3 or 4 nights, since only two weekly flights are availabe that depart directly from Maiquetía (Caracas) to the Canaima airport with the CONVIASA airline. Let's hope that the frequencies that traditionally left from Puerto Ordaz, Ciudad Bolívar and Porlamar will soon also be enabled.

The flights depart from Maiquetía on Thursdays and Sundays directly to Canaima and also return on those days. For that reason, the packages available to travel to Angel Falls are offered from Thursday to Sunday (3 nights) or from Sunday to Thursday (4 nights). The flight lasts approximately one hour.

Here we are going to provide you with reference information on what the packages that include the excursion to Angel Falls are generally like in the camps that operate under the traditional scheme (comfortable accommodations with beds) so you'll be inspired, get excited and decide to embark on this unforgettable adventure!

1

At your arrival...

The camp staff will receive you at the Canaima airstrip, they will be suited with the camp's uniform. The transfer will take place in a rustic vehicle identified with the logo of the inn, it is enabled to transport passengers comfortably and you will probably feel the emotion that at that moment startx an exciting expedition!

With an approximate duration of 15 minutes, in this transfer you will go through the main reddish earth roads of the town and the guide will comment on the most important features of the journey.

When you arrive at the camp of your choice, you will be cordially received by the lodge's staff and they will probably give you a beautiful handmade present and a delicious welcome cocktail; in addition to lunch and time to rest for a while before leaving for that day's excursion, which is likely to be to the Canaima Lagoon and/or El Sapo Falls.

At Salto el Sapo you will walk behind its waterfall, which originates in the Carrao River and which, after thousands of years of erosive work, has created a superb cave that can be traversed on foot. It is a walk that will leave you speechless as you feel the force of nature up close!

Then you will return to the camp to have dinner and rest in the surroundings of the inn or directly to your rooms.

2

Ucaima's viewpoint

All expeditions to Angel Falls start at Ucaima's Port, to get there, from the town, you will start the ascent through a beautiful path surrounded by refreshing greenery that even forms peaceful natural tunnels, to then go down from the rustic to the viewpoint of the Ucaima's River headwater and where you will feel the impetus of nature so close to you! This is one of our favorite parts ;)

From here you can see the head of Ucaima's waterfall (one of the waterfalls of the Canaima Lagoon) with its turbulent waters and fertile energy. The solemnity of these troubled waters leaves anyone speechless! and that is just the waterfall that seems smaller from the lagoon.

Back in the rustic and after about 5 more minutes, you will arrive at Puerto Ucaima where you will take one of the inn's curiaras (indigineous traditional canoes) to start the navigation towards Auyantepuy.

Heading to Angel Falls

Usually, the departure is early, around 9 in the morning after breakfast at the inn. It can even be earlier, before 6am for the packages that include the "full day" excursion, that is, round trip on the same day.

If you select one of the camps that are located in the surroundings of the Canaima Lagoon, such as Waku Lodge, Canaima Camp, Ara Merú or Waka Wena, you will first pass through the Ucaima Viewpoint, which we discussed in the previous point.

Subsequently, you will begin the journey by curiara along the Carrao River to Mayupa. On this journey you will be escorted by the plateaus of the Kurawaina, Kusari and Parakaupa tepuis, sublime companions that Mother Nature offers you.

In the Mayupa savannah you will take a short walk of approximately 30 minutes, since curiaras with passengers are not allowed to pass through these rapids (segments of the river that can become a bit turbulent). Below you will enjoy beautiful color contrasts: the red and black of the river (because of its minerals), the blue of the sky accompanied by the white of the clouds, the green of the tepuis in the background and the earth tones of the sand on the beach :D

From the top of this small mountain you will appreciate beautiful landscapes and you will be able to take radiant photos; In addition, there is a small craft store belonging to the indigenous community of Mayupa, where you can buy beautiful local crafts and thus also collaborate with the inhabitants of this small village.

Then you will take the curiara again to continue sailing up the river, passing through the Well of Happiness, an exhilarating and refreshing waterfall (which is also one of our favorites) to continue to Orquídea Island. On this journey you will see how you get closer and closer to Auyantepuy and you will appreciate how great it is!

On the way there will be a stop for lunch, continuing through the Aonda rapids and we will enter the Churún River where they will pass through countless rapids, always accompanied by the majestic Auyantepuy.

Depending on the time you arrive at the base camp in front of the Auyantepuy, it may be that on that same day you will hike to Angel Falls or very early the next day.

Salto Angel en Canaima - Venezuela.... HERMOOOOSO!!

The trek to Angel Falls will last about 1 hour into the jungle through a natural trail of roots and stones. Then, you will arrive at the Laime Viewpoint from which photographs of the imposing Angel Falls are usually taken and where you can sit down to admire and give thanks to nature for such an impressive gift that it is giving you! :)

You will rest a bit and then continue the walk to the waterfall pool where (if the water level allows it) you can take a dip in its cool waters. You will take a well-deserved break after the hike and then return to the shelter.

The camp team will most probably prepare an exquisite grilled chicken (called here "pollo en vara") for dinner and you will sleep in the shelter in front of Angel Fall. In this itinerary we include the only option in which it is possible to sleep in beds in the middle of this jungle and with a marvelous view of Angel Falls (the bathrooms are shared, some for women and others for men). There are other options that we also work with, however, in all of them the accommodation that night is in hammocks. Or you can also opt for the "fullday" option so you can sleep in the comfortable facilities that each of them offers.

Nearby excursions... Canaima Lagoon and Salto El Sapo

These are the two expeditions that, in general, are also included in the packages that are offered when you go to see Angel Falls. Depending on the itinerary, it is possible that they do one of the two on the day of arrival and the other after the Angel Falls tour.

Although some might think they are "fillers" for the main attraction, both experiences are extremely exciting! and as full of life and emotion as Angel Falls itself. Prepare your camera (waterproof), your body and mind because you will feel emotions that you will remember with great enthusiasm all your life! It is indescribable what the power of the water and the force of its falls can make us feel.

At Salto el Sapo you will walk behind its waterfall, which originates at the Carrao River and which, after thousands of years of erosive work, has created a superb cave that can be traversed on foot. It is a walk that will leave you speechless as you feel the force of nature up close!

notes Notes

USEFUL: Read our Tips and recommendations for your travel to Canaima as well as some other useful information about this tours and expeditions.

It is better to go on this journey in the rainy season, approximately from mid-May to the end of December, it all depends on when the rains begin and end, as this is when the curiaras can better navigate the rivers and also when the waterfalls are full of water. For the dry season we now count with a new proposal that we'll be publishing in our site very soon!

This excursion is appropriate for families with children older than 7 years.

The expedition itineraries may vary a lot depending on the group, weather and flight schedule.

Prices are per person in double or triple occupancy. There are surcharges for single occupancy (one person sleeping in a room).

On the night sleeping at Angel Fall's shelter, you'll need to vacate the camp's room and return the key at the reception. However, the inn will provide you with a space to store belongings that are not necessary to take on the Angel Falls excursion; remember that in this type of expeditions it is extremely important to travel light (without much luggage) so that you can comfortably enjoy everything that the destination has to offer.

A special recommendation

Traveling to this sector of the Canaima National Park to meet the Angel Falls is an experience that for those of us who are lucky enough to do it, only happens once in a lifetime. For this reason, we advise taking the package that offers 4 nights so that you can see and enjoy this dreamed experience much more; In addition, depending on the air itinerary, it is possible that you arrive at noon on the first day and return at mid-morning on the last day, and if you take the package that only offers 3 nights (or as it was before, the 2-night package) it is a bit tight for everything that is possible to see and do in this wonderful trip.
