DAY 2: Journey to Angel Falls – The World's Highest Waterfall
Getting ready
• Wake up early for breakfast and prepare for an awe-inspiring day day on your Angel Falls expedition! You'll depart to see not only the highest waterfall in the world but also one of the planet's oldest geological formations.
• Carry only what you'll need for the day and overnight stay at the Angel Falls base camp; the rest of your luggage can stay in your room (or in the space assigned for it in the camp).
• From the town, you will start the ascent through a beautiful path surrounded by refreshing greenery that even forms peaceful natural tunnels, to then go down from the rustic to the viewpoint of the Ucaima's River headwater and where you will feel the impetus of nature so close to you! This is one of our favorite parts ;)
• Back in the rustic and after about 5 more minutes, you will arrive at Puerto Ucaima.
The Mayupa Pass
• The journey continues with a captivating river trip in a curiara (traditional indigenous boat) along the Carrao River to the Mayupa area (15 minutes), followed by a light 30-minute walk on flat terrain through the savannah, since curiaras with passengers are not allowed to pass through these rapids (segments of the river that can become a bit turbulent).
• When you get down the curiara, you will enjoy beautiful color contrasts: the red and black of the river (because of its minerals), the blue of the sky accompanied by the white of the clouds, the green of the tepuis in the background and the earth tones of the sand on the beach :D
• From the top of this small mountain you will appreciate beautiful landscapes and you will be able to take radiant photos; In addition, there is a small craft store belonging to the indigenous community of Mayupa, where you can buy beautiful local crafts and thus also collaborate with the inhabitants of this small village.
• On this journey you will be escorted by the plateaus of the Kurawaina, Kusari and Parakaupa tepuis, sublime companions that Mother Nature offers you.
Heading to Auyantepuy
• Then you will take the curiara again to continue sailing up the river, through the Arautaima rapids, and along the way, we'll most probably stop at the Well of Happiness, an exhilarating and refreshing waterfall (which is also one of our favorites). You'll have lunch. You can bathe in its crystal-clear waters, take photos in its beautiful and photogenic mini-waterfall... in short! You can immerse yourself in the tranquility and beauty of nature.
• We proceed to Orchid Island, through the Churún River. On this journey you will see how you get closer and closer to Auyantepuy and you will appreciate how great it is! Afterwards, you will arrive at Ratoncito Island, right in front of Angel waterfall.
• Depending on the time you arrive at the base camp in front of the Auyantepuy, it may be that that same day you will hike to Angel Falls or very early the next day.
You have arrived! Angel Fall is here!
• When you arrive at the Auyantepuy base, you'll embark on a vigorous one-hour hike through dense jungle, walking a steep path on natural trails of huge roots, mud, and rocks.
• You'll arrive at Laime's Viewpoint, a colossal natural stone emerging from the jungle, offering a spectacular panorama of the magnificent Auyantepui and the full glory of Angel Falls. Here, photographs of the imposing Angel Falls are usually taken and you can sit down to admire and give thanks to nature for such an impressive gift that it is giving you! :)
• You will rest a bit and then continue the walk to the waterfall pool where (if weather and water level allows) you can take a dip in its cool waters. You will take a well-deserved break after the hike and then return to the shelter.
• Return to the base camp right in front of Angel Falls for dinner with a tremendous view of the waterfall, the tepui and at the same time, savoring delicious grilled or "en vara" chicken. Finally, you will most likely sleep in hammocks (only one of the camps offers a shelter with beds in front of Angel Falls).
