What’s the difference between rainy season and dry season in Canaima?
During the rainy season (usually from May to December), rivers run deeper and waterfalls are at their most majestic—making it the ideal time to visit Angel Falls by curiara (traditional dugout canoes handcrafted by Indigenous artisans using local wood). In contrast, during the dry season (January to April/May), the river levels drop significantly and Angel Falls tends to lose much of its water volume.
When is the best time to visit Angel Falls?
Without a doubt, the rainy season is the best time to experience Angel Falls in all its splendor. We especially recommend the months between June and November, when the weather is usually more stable and the water flow is at its ideal level.
Can I still travel during the dry season?
Yes, but please note that the river expedition to Angel Falls might not be available if water levels are too low. During dry season, waterfalls may have significantly less water. While the scenery remains breathtaking, the waterfalls won’t have the same power and flow as they do during rainy months. This is especially true for Angel Falls, though the lagoons around Canaima may still offer beautiful views.
In fact, the 2024 dry season was particularly intense, and in several cases the river was too shallow for the trip to be carried out. So it’s important to understand that Mother Nature has the final say—and although we’ll do everything we can to ensure you enjoy your time in Canaima, some natural conditions are beyond our control.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the river journey to Angel Falls can take significantly longer during dry season. What usually takes around 4 to 5 hours can stretch to 9 hours or more, and the experience becomes more physically demanding. In shallow areas, all guests must help push or even carry the curiara across dry patches—this can be exhausting, though for some, it’s an adventurous challenge that adds to the experience.
That said, there are alternative excursions that can replace the river expedition, such as the Kavac Caves tour (which includes an aerial flyover of Angel Falls) or the now-popular helicopter overflight—a spectacular option that many travelers are requesting.
How is the dry season going this year (2025)?
Thankfully, due to a mild La Niña climate phenomenon in 2025 and other favorable weather patterns in Venezuela, this year’s dry season hasn’t been as harsh as last year. Does it rain all the time during the rainy season?
Not necessarily. Rain tends to be intense but short-lived, usually in the afternoon or at night. It rarely rains all day or for several days straight with gloomy skies, like in some European countries. That said, when it rains, it really rains—we call that a “Palo e’agua” (heavy tropical downpour).

Reserve Your ExperienceWhat happens if there’s bad weather?
Nature is unpredictable and weather conditions can change quickly. If there’s heavy rain, strong winds, or rising river levels, guides may modify the itinerary. Safety is always the top priority, and many times, unexpected changes end up creating the most memorable moments.
What’s the weather like in Canaima? And what’s the temperature?
Canaima has a mostly warm and humid climate all year round. During the day, temperatures average around 32°C (89°F) and drop to about 22°C (72°F) at night. If you’re doing the overnight stay in a hammock or bed facing Angel Falls, it can feel a little chilly, so we recommend packing a light sweater or jacket.
It’s also a good idea to bring a raincoat or poncho, especially if you’re traveling during the rainy season (May to December), when short but intense showers are common.
