Flights and Transport to Canaima: What You Need to Know

How to get to Angel Falls?

Currently, there are only two weekly flights operating directly from Maiquetía Airport (which serves Caracas, the capital city) to Canaima Airport with the airline CONVIASA (a state-owned carrier). Therefore, the available itineraries are for 3 or 4 nights.

Is it possible to reach Canaima by car or boat?

The only way to reach Angel Falls is by air. There are no roads, maritime routes, or even trekking paths that lead to it, unlike the Roraima expedition, for example.

Are there daily flights to Canaima?

Nope. Flights depart from Caracas only on Thursdays and Sundays, directly to Canaima, and return on those same days. That’s why all Angel Falls travel packages are offered for Thursday to Sunday (3 nights) or Sunday to Thursday (4 nights).

Do I need to arrive early at the airport?

Yes, it’s VERY important to be at the airline counter at least 2 hours before departure. According to the Venezuelan Civil Aviation Authority (INAC), check-in closes 1 hour before the flight. Even if you're standing in line, if there's less than an hour left, you won’t be allowed to check in (even if the flight is delayed).

How much luggage can I bring?

For the Caracas-Canaima-Caracas route, passengers are allowed up to 23 kg of checked baggage and 5 kg of hand luggage. These limits must be respected, as the aircraft—even if larger than before—has limited capacity.

What type of aircraft operates this route?

Currently, the assigned aircraft on the Caracas-Canaima route is the Embraer 190, with an approximate capacity of 100 passengers. It’s a modern and comfortable airplane.

Can I take the flight from another Venezuelan airport? What happened to the Puerto Ordaz and Ciudad Bolívar flights?

At the moment, the only commercial flights available to Canaima and Angel Falls depart from Maiquetía Airport (Caracas). We hope that the routes from Puerto Ordaz, Ciudad Bolívar, and Porlamar airports will reopen soon. However, it’s also possible to book a private charter flight, especially if the commercial days (Thursday and Sunday) don’t match your international itinerary. Just keep in mind that private flights are significantly more expensive. If you need one, let us know and we’ll quote it based on your date and group size.

Are Canaima flights usually delayed?

Yes, it’s quite common for delays to occur, so it's best to be prepared and stay calm and patient (a good book, headphones, or chatting with fellow travelers will make the wait easier). Rest assured, once you arrive in Canaima, it’ll all be worth it! That said, flights can also be on time, so it’s very important to arrive early and stay alert for changes at the boarding gate, as last-minute changes are possible.

What are the flight schedules?

Usually, during low season, Conviasa flights depart early from Maiquetía/Caracas (around 7:00 a.m.) and return from Canaima around 9:00 a.m. Sometimes the assigned schedule may be closer to noon, especially during high season when a second flight is added for Thursdays and/or Sunday returns.

Is it safe to fly to Canaima?

Yes. The airline complies with the safety protocols established by the Civil Aviation Authority (INAC), and the aircraft receive regular maintenance.

How long is the flight from Caracas?

The flight from Caracas to Canaima takes approximately 1 hour and 5 minutes, though it can vary slightly depending on the weather conditions.

What about large or hard-shell suitcases?

It’s best to travel with soft luggage like backpacks or duffel bags. Hard-shell suitcases can be difficult to handle and store in the aircraft and during transfers within Canaima.

Can I book my international return flight on the same day I return from Canaima?

It’s really not recommended. Even if you manage to get the first flight out of Canaima (which is not guaranteed and must be specially requested), keep in mind that delays are frequent. Also, in Venezuela, you should be at the international airport at least 3 to 4 hours before your flight (depending on the airline and aircraft size—if it’s a large aircraft, expect long lines). So booking your Canaima return and your international departure on the same day can be risky.
