Excursions and Activities in Canaima: All You Need to Know

Exploring Canaima is much more than visiting Angel Falls. This magical land offers unique experiences: hikes through lush jungle and ancient tepui formations, river navigation in traditional curiaras, and breathtaking sunrises, sunsets, and starlit nights in an untouched destination—some of them even right in front of the world’s highest waterfall. Here we answer the most frequently asked questions about the tours and activities you can enjoy during your trip.

Is the Angel Falls expedition mandatory?

No. While it’s the highlight of most trips to Canaima, the Angel Falls expedition is optional. If you decide not to go, you can enjoy other included activities or even opt for a scenic flight or alternative excursion depending on your interests.

Can you visit Angel Falls all year round?

Yes, but with some important considerations. Angel Falls is best experienced during the rainy season (May to November) when the rivers are full and the waterfall is at its most powerful. In the dry season (January to April/May), the water level can drop significantly, and sometimes the river expedition becomes unavailable due to low water levels. See our full article about seasons in Canaima.

Can you hike to the top of Angel Falls?

No, it’s not allowed or safe to hike to the top of Angel Falls. The area is remote, the terrain is rugged, and it’s part of a protected national park. However, you can hike to a spectacular lookout point at the base of the falls during the river expedition.

Can I swim at Angel Falls or in the Canaima lagoon?

Yes! Most packages include a tour to the Canaima Lagoon, where you can swim near powerful waterfalls like El Sapo or El Hacha. If you go on the Angel Falls expedition, there’s also a chance to swim in the river near the base of the falls (as long as conditions are safe). It’s a magical and refreshing experience.

What physical condition is needed for the hikes?

Most tours are accessible to travelers in average shape. However, the Angel Falls expedition includes a 4–5 hour canoe ride and an optional 1-hour hike through forest terrain with mud, roots, and steep slopes. What optional excursions can I do in Canaima?

You can upgrade or add experiences like:

Helicopter overflights to Angel Falls

Half-day tour to Kavac Caves, which includes a scenic flight over Angel Falls

Romantic candlelit dinner by the lagoon or riverside

Special lodging upgrades (luxury rooms, views, overnight in Angel Falls sleeping in beds, etc.)

What happens if it rains or the river dries up?

In Canaima, Mother Nature sets the pace. If there’s heavy rain, rising water, fog or strong wind, guides may adjust the schedule or change the route. Likewise, if the river is too low during dry season, the Angel Falls expedition may take longer or be replaced. More about this in our weather guide.

What if the itinerary changes?

It’s very common for the itinerary to shift in response to natural factors or operational needs. Don’t worry: local guides are experts at adapting the schedule and making the best of every situation. Sometimes unexpected changes turn into the best memories!

How is the night in a hammock at Angel Falls? Are beds available?

During the Angel Falls expedition, you’ll usually sleep in hammocks under a shelter facing the waterfall. It’s an adventurous, magical night. There is one camp that can offer cabins with beds instead of hammocks—this is an optional upgrade. If you prefer more comfort, you can read more about it in our online booking section under the package "Boutique Experience".
