There are travelers aged 70, 80, and even over 90 who have taken part in this adventure with great enthusiasm and energy. Everything depends on the person’s physical condition and mindset. That said, here are several key aspects to consider:
Journey by curiara
The trip to Angel Falls is done in a traditional wooden canoe called a curiara, navigating for approximately 4 to 5 hours. While it's an unforgettable journey, it can become uncomfortable for those with back problems or difficulty staying seated for extended periods. There are no bathrooms onboard, and sometimes weather conditions (rain or intense sun) can add to the challenge.
Hike to the viewpoint
The final part of the expedition includes an optional hike of about one hour to the Angel Falls viewpoint (a great spot for stunning photos). The trail includes a few challenges:
- The path is filled with slippery roots, mud and rocks.
- The first 40 minutes are relatively flat.
- The last 20 minutes are on a slope of approximately 35 degrees.
- The total distance is about 3.3 km (2 miles).
This section can be challenging for those with knee issues or limited mobility. However, the hike is optional, and many travelers choose to stay at the base camp instead.
Non-hiking alternative
If hiking to the viewpoint isn’t possible for you, there’s always the option to stay at the shelter located right in front of Angel Falls. From there, you’ll still enjoy a breathtaking scenery with a spectacular view of the waterfall—especially if you choose one of the camps with beds directly facing the falls. Many visitors opt for this and still have an unforgettable experience.

What if I have knee pain?
It really depends on how serious the issue is. If it’s not a major condition, many travelers with minor pain or discomfort can complete the route without issues, simply by taking it easy. The final part of the trail can be a bit demanding, so we recommend going step by step, especially on the descent.
